INSIDE THE SILENCE was a photography & writing project done with 5th & 6th graders at Murphy Elementary School in Chicago. With digital cameras they explored what silence looks like to them and then wrote about all of the things they hear inside the silence. I worked with two great classroom teachers Rebeca Leverenz and Peter DeLaurentis who were true collaborators in every sense.

Students wrote poems individually but read them back in small groups for the recording. I asked them to figure out how to read their entire poems back to ensure that there were: a) moments of silence b) moments where everyone was reading at the same time c) whispers d) moments of loudness e)moments where each person got to read by themselves. I wanted the visuals to explore and record moments of calm but the audio to be an amplification of the myriad of sounds one can hear in the quietness.
